Renewable or non-renewable energy resources

19 10 2009

One of the themes of this topic is to make sure we know the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non-renewable energy resources. Last week we worked from this website

http://home.clara.net/darvill/altenerg/index.htm

This website helped us to complete some work on different energy resources and find out about if there are either renewable or non-renewable
These clips will also help

HOLIDAY HOMEWORK – RESEARCH ABOUT ENERGY SAVING AND GLOBAL WARMING

19 10 2009

Your homework is to research about about how normal human life can impact upon global warming

This website is really cool at describing what the issues and how we need to tackle them – we have worked really hard at learning about energy efficiency and how to be better at this

WATCH THIS

CLICK BELOW
http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/Climate-Change

Your task is to produce project to describe 3 things about CLIMATE CHANGE – because this is happening because millions of people the world over are wasting lots of energy, leaving big CARBON FOOTPRINTS

- Describe what climate change is
- What the effects will happen to the UK
- What action we can take to avoid this

Write your work on a word doc or a powerpoint and send it to me at this email address

Make sure that you check your spelling as we will all be judged to find a winner!!!!

How to make a house energy efficient?

15 10 2009

When you are older and home owners, you will no doubt want to have an energy efficient house.

This means that as energy as possible is saved and used in the home as possible RATHER than wasted!!!

http://www.nef.org.uk/actonCO2/ecohome.asp

Click on the website – read as much as you can and write in the comment box below at LEAST 15 ways to increase energy efficiency in your home.

Then state the reasons for why we need to be energy efficient

Where do we get our energy from?

14 10 2009

So next we need to identify where we get the energy to do the things we take for granted at HOME!!!

We know we have electrical energy supplied to the house – but where get this electrical energy from?

WE USE ENERGY RESOURCES – a source of energy that we can transform easily into electrical energy. At the moment we use a lot if different resources – today we will be finding about them and deciding if they are either renewable or non-renewable.

We will completing the rest of our task sheet today by looking at both the text book and also these weblinks

Using SANKEY DIAGRAMS to work out waste energy

14 10 2009

Remember what we said the units of energy are?

When something like a radio TRANSFORMS electrical energy to sound and heat, scientists can work out how much is wasted by drawing a SANKEY DIAGRAM.

In the first part of today’s lesson, we will be drawing SANKEY diagrams to show how much energy is wasted.

First lets look at a few examples

Describing our carbon footprints!!!!

9 10 2009

This lesson is about knowing

WHAT OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT IS?
What casues it to be LARGE?
THE CONSEQUENCES OF A LARGE CARBON FOOTPRINT?
HOW WE CAN REDUCE IT.

vIEW THIS

What does it say?

Hello – your new place to help you study science this year

4 10 2009

Today’s lesson will look at energy being transferred from one thing to another and how we can prove this.
We will use the dragon breath demo to show the effects of burning a fuel on the surrondings.

Look at this clip of a rocket launch – what do you think will happen to the air around it. Why?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8145525.stm

Then we shall think about the what happens in a home when natural gas is burnt to heat our homes and homeowners have not made sufficient improvements to their insulation!!!

Why should we insulate our homes?
